While Commonwealth Games athletes on the Gold Coast were inspiring Australians with their dedication, skill and impressive outcomes, Australian cosmetic physicians including myself and NBLDC’s Head Registered Nurse, Snr Kim Murphy, were fortunate enough to be inspired by world leaders in aesthetic medicine from Brazil, New York and London at the annual Australian Medical Aesthetic Congress. And we were just as impressed by their dedication, skill and impressive outcomes in their use of injectables.
When we use the term “injectables” we’re talking about treatments that involve injecting a product under the skin to change its appearance.
In general, these are:
- botulinum toxin type A (the most famous of these is Botox)
- hyaluronic acid fillers (most commonly used to add volume to lips and cheeks)
- deoxycholic acid (a new treatment that reduces double chins)
Using fillers to reverse signs of ageing
The very suave Dr Mauricio de Maio from Brazil demonstrated the incredible transformations that can be achieved by the judicious use of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers to replace age related facial volume loss.
As we age, shrinking of the fat pads in our cheeks results in volume loss of our cheeks which can make us look older than we feel.
By carefully replacing this lost volume with dermal fillers, we can make the face fuller and fresher looking while maintaining a very natural appearance.
At our clinic.....
When treating cheeks with dermal fillers, I prefer to start conservatively.
I use with 1-2mls of filler per side. Treating cheeks can often be combined with using filler to help plump out lips, which also lose volume as we age.
I review my patients at one month, at which point we can assess whether additional filler is necessary. It is always my goal to give my patients a more natural transition from a flatter to fuller cheek.
A bonus benefit for treating double chin
Dr Sachin Shridharani, a prominent plastic surgeon from New York, shared his extensive experience in successfully using deoxycholic acid (Belkyra) to treat double chins.
He explained that, by treating the double chin, there is an added advantage for most patients – and we love that! When a reduction in the heaviness of excess weight under chin area is achieved, many patients find that they also lose the “drags down” effect to the cheeks that the double chin weight caused. This results in a fresher, less saggy appearance.
At our clinic....
Our clinic has been offering the Belkyra treatment for double chin for almost a year and we’re excited to have this added benefit to offer patients. Belkyra involves injecting the product into the excess weight of the chin, and may require several rounds of treatments but can achieve a fantastic results.
Adding volume to ageing temples
Dr Tapan Patel, from London’s PHI Clinic talked about injecting temples with hylauronic acid filler. Like cheeks and lips, our temples become hollower as we age.
By restoring volume in the temple area, a more youthful look can be achieved and the position of the lateral eyebrow is gently improved, without the need for surgical intervention.
At our clinic...
I personally find the temples one of the most satisfying areas to treat with dermal fillers because of the dramatic effect it can have on patient’s appearance.
Patients are often concerned with the treatment being painful, as our temples carry a unique sense of tenderness.
At our clinic, we have a full range of pain management options so you can have confidence that together we’ll find the right pain management pathway for you.
