Fractionated laser (Fraxel) Treatment Overview

What is fractionated laser (fraxel)?

Whether you’re noticing the effects of sun damage, acne scarring or fine lines creeping in, fractionated laser (Fraxel laser) offers a proven way to refresh your skin. Using advanced fractionated laser technology, this treatment targets damaged skin below the surface, stimulating natural collagen production.

At Neutral Bay Laser & Dermatology Clinic, our highly-trained team offers Fraxel laser treatment as a safe, effective way to improve skin texture and tone with long-lasting results.

Fraxel is a type of fractionated laser therapy that creates microscopic channels in the skin, just enough to trigger your body’s healing response without damaging surrounding tissue.

This controlled micro-injury leads to the production of new collagen and elastin, helping to:

  • Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
  • Improve skin tone and texture
  • Fade pigmentation and sun damage
  • Minimise the appearance of acne or surgical scars
  • Restore smoother, fresher-looking skin

Results gradually appear over several weeks, with the most noticeable improvements typically seen 3–6 months after your final session.

What To Expect Before Fractionated laser (Fraxel)

On the day of your treatment:

  • You’ll be given a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) for 2 hours before we begin
  • You can relax in one of our private treatment rooms during this time
  • Treatment time depends on the area being treated. Typically between 30-60minutes

How To Prepare for Fractionated laser (Fraxel) Treatment

To get the best possible results and minimise side effects, follow these simple steps in the lead-up to your appointment:

  • Avoid sun exposure and fake tanning products for at least 2 weeks
  • Skip any skin treatments (like peels or waxing) in the week prior
  • Arrive at your appointment with clean, makeup-free skin
  • Hydrate well and avoid alcohol the day before

But don’t worry, we’ll give you full pre-treatment instructions to help you prepare for your appointment.

Fractionated laser (Fraxel) Aftercare

It’s completely normal to experience some redness and swelling after Fraxel laser treatment, most people describe it as feeling like a mild sunburn. Here’s what to expect and how to care for your skin:

  • Redness and swelling are usually most noticeable in the first 1–2 days
  • Skin may feel rough or dry and appear bronzed or flaky after 3–4 days
  • Use cold compresses for 10 minutes every 1–2 hours on the day of treatment
  • Sleep with your head elevated (if the face was treated) to minimise swelling
  • Avoid makeup, heat, exercise, or alcohol for the rest of the day
  • Apply SPF 50+ daily and wear a wide-brimmed hat outdoors
  • Gently shave or cleanse the treated area the following day, as needed

Following these steps helps the healing process and to minimise downtime.
