Leg veins: Condition Overview

What are leg veins?

Leg veins are a common condition that appear as we age. They consist of red, purple or blue veins, and may appear on the surface or bulge from the legs.

The condition gets worse over time and will not resolve on its own. However, there are very effective treatments that can resolve the issue or reduce the appearance of the veins.

Veins can swell, looking bruised and becoming painful. They can induce itching, dryness, eczema and aching. And they can develop ulceration and clot, which can lead to infection and more series issues such as vein blocking in and around vital organs.

The good news is that they can be effectively treated.

FAQs about Leg veins

What causes leg veins?

Genetic predisposition is the key factor in predicting the likelihood of this condition existing. However, as with all things genetic, other factors also play a role.

Pregnancy is one such factor, as is any condition that involves pressure developing in the abdomen or pelvis. Other factors to keep to a minimum to avoid developing or worsening this condition include:

  • being overweight
  • prolonged standing
  • lack of exercise, especially aerobic exercise

Treatment options for leg veins

There are several options for treating leg veins and the right option for you will depend on the type of veins that you have and the extent of development of the condition.

Compression stockings, which tightly compress the legs and re-align the veins to decrease bulging and protruding, are a common first step.

Microsclerothtrapy is an option for smaller, superficial veins, and involves injecting veins with a solution that helps these non-essential veins to close.

Sclerotherapy is similar, but used for bigger or deeper veins, and involves an ultrasound-guided injection into the veins.

Laser ablation (EVLT) of deep, incompetent vessels is available where deemed suitable, involving laser treatment to neutralise the veins.

How long will it take for leg veins to disappear?

Most leg vein treatment options require several treatments, and compression stockings will be required for a week following each treatment, so some planning to ensure your schedule allows for this may be required. For microsclerotherapy, sclerotherapy and laser treatment, several weeks are required between treatment sessions, with the best results being seen after several months.

Patients are likely to require maintenance treatments every couple of years, as they develop more veins.
