Age spots (seborrheic keratoses): Condition Overview

What are age spots?

Age spots are pigmented patches of skin that appear as we age, as a result of sun damage. They most commonly appear on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands and lower legs – those parts of the skin that have most exposure to the sun.

Other skin pigmentation conditions can be mistaken for age spots, including skin cancers. For this reason, we recommend regular skin checks for all Australians. If you have fairer skin, annual skin checks are probably the best option.

FAQs about Age spots (seborrheic keratoses)

Are age spots medically serious?

Most pigmented spots on the skin are not serious. However, if pigmented spots change, or appear, they should be reviewed by a dermatologist to rule out anything more serious, such as skin cancer.

Age spots are not medically serious and do not require treatment. However, for many patients, they are troublesome from a cosmetic perspective, and treatment is desired.

How can age spots be treated?

For fairer skin tones, age spots can be treated with Intense Pulsed Light or laser treatments. These target the pigment and lighten it. Several treatment sessions will probably be required.

For darker skin tones, more careful use of lasers and other treatments are often the best option, as the pigment in the surrounding skin is at risk of being lightened along with the age spot. At NBLDC, we have a range of laser, light and energy based treatment options to choose from, which allows us to fine tune treatment to suit your skin type.

Treating age spots along with other signs of ageing

Age spots can be treated along with other signs of ageing, such as changes in skin texture, redness, loss of collagen and volume, and wrinkles, in a variety of skin rejuvenation treatments.

Skin rejuvenation treatments vary greatly in their level of impact, invasiveness and the longevity of results.

We recommend booking in for a Radiance Skin Assessment, during which you will have a skin analysis using our Visia camera, which will show what ageing and skin damage you’re currently experiencing. One of our specialist skin care nurses will talk through the results of the Visia analysis, advise you on possible skin rejuvenation options to address the issues identified, as well as explore the skin care options best suited to your skin condition, from our Radiance Skin Care range. In some cases, you will be able to go ahead with a treatment on the day.
