What is laser hair removal?
Hair removal using lasers is one of the most popular cosmetic laser treatments available, and can be very effective. It can be used to treat hair on most parts of the body, commonly the legs, arms, back, bikini, buttocks, axilla (under arms) and some parts of the face. Laser hair removal is most successful treating pigmented hair (dark) and pale skin, but our wide selection of lasers means we can safely treat darker skin tones as well.
You will initially have a consult with a laser hair removal specialist nurse, who will assess the area to be treated and give you a guide as to how many sessions might be required. The nurse will also ensure there is no pre-existing skin concerns that might be adversely affected by laser treatment.
Permanent hair reduction can be achieved for some patients, however others may experience regrowth over time, requiring “top-up” treatments. To reach a satisfactory result, most patients require at least 4 treatments, possibly up to 8 or 10, each spaced 6-8 weeks apart.
The area should be shaved the night before treatment. Sun exposure and fake tanning should be avoided 2 weeks prior to treatment. Avoid waxing, tweezing or electrolysis should also be avoided for 2 weeks prior to treatment.
Avoid perfume on any treated areas. Alcohol and strenuous exercise should be avoided for the rest of the day. We highly recommend using SPF50 to protect your skin after being treated.
- Permanent or near-permanent hair removal is possible for most patients with paler skin tones and hair with dark pigment
- Long term time saving, eradicating the need for shaving, waxing or other temporary depilatory activities
- No more worrying about whether you’ve shaved your legs before running out the door to the beach, or wearing a shorter skirt or shorts.

What are the possible risks of hair removal laser treatment?
Hair removal always creates the possibility of hair regrowing as ingrown hairs, which can lead to small bumps. However, laser removal presents less ongoing risk of ingrown hairs than other hair removal options, because hair is permanently or semi-permanently removed, and therefore does not reqrow as much.
Hair removal lasers target pigment. Therefore, those with darker skin tones can experience skin lightening when being treated with such lasers. Many hair removal clinics do not have the range of lasers available at NBLDC, and we have seen patients who have been left with pale “dots” from hair removal lasers that should never have been used on their dark skin. For this reason, we recommend dark skinned patients seek treatment advice from medical laser clinics with a wide range of lasers, allowing for the treatment of the widest range of skin tones.
What does hair removal laser treatment feel like?
Patients experience the feeling of laser treatment differently. For most, it feels like the flicking of a small rubber band.
